DOXA DEO CITY CHANGERS INSTITUTE
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

INTRODUCTION
The School of Education is a holistic training program designed within Doxa Deo to equip people as full time teachers and educators.  The School is focused on training people within the Development, Intermediary and FET phases in order to fulfilling the school’s vision of “Equipping and Training people who are called into primary and secondary education, through a Christ Centred approach, to bring about city transformation.”  In Psalm 32:8 we see how the Lord instruct David in His ways, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you and keep my eye on you.”  In the School of Education we therefore believe in “Equipping teachers, transforming students.”  The School endeavour to accomplish this vision through five education and training philosophies contained in its mission statement.

  • Formal academic training – Provide a student with the necessary knowledge and understanding of educational concepts and teaching dissiplines as well as the ability to reason and critically analise the obtained knowledge.  This is achieved through either an accredited B. Ed degree or a PGCE qualification through a University of your choice.

  • Practical experience training – Continuous practical teaching exposure, training and evaluation.  This includes general practical training like lesson planning, presentation and moderation; week and year planning; curriculum development; portfolio preparation; sport, cultural and extra mural activities; etc.  As part of the practical experience training students will also be exposed to a variety of ministry elements like equipping, caring, worship and outreach; as presented by the Doxa Deo East Campus leadership team.  Students will also be exposed to local and national cities outreaches focusing on both education and ministry.

  • Mandate impartation
    – Is to provide a student with a thorough understanding and the ability to apply and integrate the Doxa Deo mandate, strategy and values.  This is achieved through the City Changers Ministry Program and the City Changers Institute Orientation and Investment Weekends.

  • Leadership development – Is to provide a student with a thorough understanding and the ability to apply and integrate the Doxa Deo leadership values.  This will cover the spectrum from leadership as an art to leadership tools and skills.  This is achieved through the City Changers Ministry Program and the City Changers Institute Orientation and Investment Weekends.  However students will also have constant exposure to senior educators and management from which the will observe and learn different leadership styles.

  • Mentoring and discipleship
    – Within the City Changers Institute we believe that “It takes a village to raise a child”.  This means continuous mentoring and discipleship by the Doxa Deo Fearie Glen School and College leadership and educator team; covering five specialised areas of fathering, character development, emotional care, academic support and practical educational feedback.

FORMAT
The School of Education currently presents 2 programs, both of which are on a full time basis.  The first is a 4 year undergraduate B. Ed program where the second is a 1 year postgraduate PGCE program.  Both programs engage in all 5 philosophical outcomes, only differing in duration of studies and the formal accredited qualification obtained.  Due to the duration of the PGCE program, students will however be asked to complete all 3 years of the City Changers Ministry Program and the City Changers Institute Investment Weekends.  These are part time components so the graduate student can already begin to work following their year of full time PGCE training.  The School of Education have 1 learning centre for full time students based at the Doxa Deo East Campus School and College in Tshwane.

FEES
Doxa Deo sees the School of Education as an investment in future primary and secondary teachers.  The School therefore focuses on only covering overhead expenses and not generating a profit.  Total cost for the program in 2010 will be as follows:

Undergraduate Program – R 5,500
Postgraduate Program – R 4,500

The R 1,000 difference in the program fees is in that it will be compulsory for all undergraduate students to attend the Doxa Deo 1st year camp in January 2010 where as for post graduate students it will only be optional.

The fees therefore include among other things:
- The City Changers Ministry Program
- The City Changers Institute Orientation
- All four City Changers Institute Investment Weekends
- The Doxa Deo first year camp (Undergraduate students)
- Local outreach programs

This amount does however exclude the all university fees (please contact the university of your choice to find out what their 2010 fees will be) as well as the one week outreach program during the June / July holiday.  More information regarding this outreach will be supplied to students at the start of each year.
